Two Unitary Councils Confirmed for Surrey: East & West Surrey

Local Government Reorganisation in Surrey – Key Points

The government has now confirmed that Surrey will move to two new unitary councils — East Surrey and West Surrey — from April 2027. This is hardly a big surprise, and not the three unitary authorities that Tandridge and most of the districts (all except for Elmbridge and Mole Valley) were hoping for, and which we believe would have better represented our interests, geography and local cultural and business links, but the deal is done, so we can at least now move forward with the reorganisation process.

Devolution in Surrey and how this may (or may not) affect the Parish Council

The UK government’s recent devolution proposals aim to restructure local governance in England by replacing the existing two-tier system of county and district councils with larger unitary authorities, each serving populations of at least 500,000 residents.

In Surrey, this means that the current county council and its 11 district and borough councils, including Tandridge District Council, are slated for abolition and consolidation into one or more unitary authorities – the most likely scenario is believed to be two unitary authorities.

Farming for the Future: How local farmers like Simon Chiles are Safeguarding our local land and wildlife

Please read this article on Simon Chiles and his insights into farming and biodiversity in today’s challenging environment. Farmers like Simon are quietly getting on with the job — drawing on decades of experience to adapt, innovate, and care for the land. While policymakers debate priorities and public attention shifts, it’s farmers on the ground who understand the daily realities of agriculture. In this article, Simon provides insight into the pressures facing British farming today — and why supporting those who work the land has never mattered more…

We are very lucky to have farmers like Simon looking out for our farmland. Simon is a valued member of our Biodiversity round table.

Thank You for Supporting the Replacement of Limpsfield’s Stolen Horse Trough

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who generously contributed to our GoFundMe campaign to replace the stolen horse trough.

As announced at our annual parish meeting last night, the campaign has now officially closed. Thanks to the support of our community, a substantial donation from the Drinking Fountain Association, and confirmation from our insurers, we have successfully raised the funds needed to commission a faithful replica—complete with all original engravings—and to install it with enhanced security measures.
We are immensely grateful to our local residents for their kindness and solidarity, and to the BBC for helping to spread the word.

Sadly, heritage items like our horse trough are often stolen to order, and Limpsfield is not alone in experiencing such a loss. The trough held great historical and sentimental value, and it is deeply frustrating to think it may now sit, unrecognised and unappreciated, in someone’s private garden far from its rightful place.

If anyone has information about the original trough’s whereabouts, we would still love to recover it. But for now, we must assume it is lost. We hope the new replica, planned for installation this summer, will help restore some of what was taken—both physically from our village and emotionally from our hearts.

Thank you once again for your incredible support.

Detillens Lane Speedwatch update

by Dr John Nathan

“Detillens lane Speedwatch has been running for about ten years.

Believe it or not, there are 16,000 traffic movements per week along Detillens lane, approximately half in each direction. A small proportion of drivers think that they are Lewis Hamilton, and this is Silverstone racing circuit. I worked in the Accident and Emergency department of a big District Hospital years ago, and you only have to attend an A&E department after a speed related road accident to see the effects of speeding. We set up the Speedwatch scheme here to protect our residents from accidents and road noise.

It is all done in cooperation with Surrey Police. New recruits are trained by the Police (nowadays on line) and every week, at different days and times, a team of three stands out in Detillens lane taking traffic speeds and other details with a speed gun supplied by the Police. Those vehicles caught speeding are then reported to the Police who write them a letter. Speeders cannot be prosecuted but our statistics show that very few are caught more than once, so it is effective. It has been shown to reduce speeding from 75% to 42%.

I am extremely grateful to the dedicated team of twelve who do this year round, always with a cheerful smile and a joke. We are always keen to recruit new volunteers, so if you want to join us please contact me. There is another team in Bluehouse lane, but I would like to see other teams in Limpsfield, sending a loud message to tearaways not to speed in our village.

Yours,

Dr John Nathan. MB. BS. Coordinator.

Our horse trough fundraising appeal made the BBC News!

As you will know, Limpsfield’s historic horse trough, once a landmark at Detillens Lane and the A25, was stolen in August 2024. Despite initial strong evidence, police have not been able to further pursue leads, and it sadly remains unrecovered. The Parish Council is now working to replace it with a high-quality replica.

This week, Craig Buchan and Paul Brennan of BBC Surrey/South East got behind our endeavours and ran a piece on BBC News South East and recorded an interview for the BBC Surrey breakfast show with James Cannon.

You can read the online article here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce3q0y0zx72o

Originally donated in 1913 by Alice and Horace Barry, the trough bore inscriptions from the Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association and had been part of daily life for well over a century.

Although insured, it is an incredibly specialist item and difficult to value and while our insurers are happy to pay out on the trough, the amount may not fully cover a quality replacement plus secure installation. The Council will be contributing, we have also had a generous offer of a donation from the Drinking Fountain Association, and we have launched an appeal for public donations to ensure we get the best replacement we can.
